Things that are great: wifi range extenders

Having a giant house with loads of metal and a router in one corner of the house with no external antennae means that wifi doesn’t make it to certain parts of the house, which kind of sucks since I don’t want to use data in my own home. Put in a wifi range extender, boom, wifi in pretty much all of the house, including the backyard. Not terribly expensive and pretty sweet.

They’re great until they start slowing down and not being great.

Add giant house to complete the formula.

And place the router in the absolute worst spot.

Any particular reason why that would happen?

Don’t know. It just sorta happened after a year with mine.

I’ll get a giant car with wifi hotspot capability, park it in the giant garage, hook it up to a battery tender, and leave it on 24/7.

I have one I am selling on Kijiji that I was given that we don’t need in our house if anybody in needs one! :P

Joking aside, they are pretty handy...from doing computer work for folks, I can recommend the Linksys/Cisco ones!

I bought a TP-Link that was on sale on Amazon since I’ve had pretty good experience with the company.

You have to reboot them periodically

Did you try to re-pair it with the router?

Yes. Yes I did try that.

... and I supposed you rebooted the router, too. Hmmm ... Last thing I’d try is to move the extender closer to the router - like, line of site or just the next room - do a speed test before and after to see how much difference there is.

There is no outlet closer that would cover the house. Thanks though. I’ll figure it out eventually.

It could be really tall and cavernous.

No I just meant to move it closer to validate that the extender is choking and that it is not environmental

I got a couple of TP-Link internet extenders that use the house’s electrics, added couple more for my room’ TV and computers. Fantastic Internet speeds.

Yep. Can confirm its very to have in a large-ish house. My games are still wired into the router though.

Most of the cheaper ones wear out over time. At first they need rebooting more then you realize that they aren’t getting as strong of a signal in the same spot. I’m not exactly sure what degrades inside them, but it is likely due to a lot of heat in a small space fatiguing components over time. Unlike a lot of electronics, they do t seem to just die but rather get slower. I've seen it happen to several of them. On the plus side, you can just replace them with another cheap one for less than $30.
